3. PATIENT EXPEREINTS - Celebral Palsy

NAME: Chen
AGE: 3 years old
COUNTRY: China
DIAGNOSIS: Cerebral Palsy ,2006

REASON FOR COMING TO TREATMENT: When Chen was born,he appeared to be a normal baby, but his parents soon noticed that he was not moving, crying and appeared to have difficulty breathing. Shortly after this,he began to have severe seizures and had to be put under a heavy regime of anticonvulsant medication. EEG tests taken at this time revealed that Chen had almost no brain activity. At three months old he was diagnosed with Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy caused by a lack of blood flow and lowered oxygen levels in the brain. The doctors told his parents that he would likely develop Cerebral Palsy and would have severe physical and mental disabilities when he grew up. After the parents discovered umbilical cord stem cell transplants being used for many Cerebral Palsy cases and decided t o take an opportunity .

TREATMENT: Stem Cell Transplants with Rehabilitation Therapy.
START OF TREATMENT: 17 November ,2007
BEFORE THE TREATMENT: Chen has a mixed type of Cerebral Palsy, which means that the tone in his muscles fluctuates from very high to very low. He could control some of his movements and was just starting to roll over before he came. However, these movements were quite slow and clumsy. His trunk muscles were too weak to hold himself upright and he would flop over and become distressed when sitting if no one was there to help him.

AFTER THE TREATMENT: After the stem cell treatments, his coordination and balance were greatly improved. He was able to reach out and grab things more accurately and more quickly than before. His trunk muscles became stronger and he was able to hold himself sitting up for significant periods of time. After the treatment,he was able to role over much more quickly than before. Also helping him to stand better, the bottom of his feet lost their extreme sensitivity to touch. His control of his mouth and his tongue improved greatly, resulting in a drastic reduction in his drooling and the ability to make new sounds.

NAME: Mohamed
AGE: 24
COUNTRY: Qatar
DIAGNOSIS: Spinal Cord Injury
REASON FOR COMING TO TREATMENT: In 2005 Mohamed suffered from a car accident ,which resulted in a lack of sensation in his legs and a lack of strength. H e was diagnosed with a spiral cord injury of T10-11 and underwent an operation in German to correct this problem. Unfortunately, the operation was not successful to solve his problem.

He lacked sensation in some areas of his abdomen and he had incomplete sensation in his legs. In his right leg,he was unable to feel sharp objects, and he had only slightly better sensation in his left leg. In his feet, sensation was particularly poor, which added to his difficulty in walking because he could not feel the floor.

AFTER THE TREATMENT:
After the completion of his treatment,Mohamed had experience several significant improvements that he felt would have a major impact on his standard of living. He regained the sensation throughout most of his abdomen, and the sensation in his legs also improved. Particularly important, the sensation on the bottom of his feet came back, helping him to walk without tripping. Most important was that he regained control and strength in his left leg. He was able to pick it up off the ground, for extended periods of time and was able to lift his foot and toes.
